    Strange writing and political plot
This review contains spoilers. Starts off very stereotypical “prince breaking off the engagement with little thought for consequences” and immediately justifies the FL. The marrying cousins and such mirrors history but they take it a bit far with the obsessive, incestuous vibes. If there was a time for exposition, the soulmates thing would have been it. But no, you have to piece it together and there’s not even enough context/dialogue to understand the in-world concept. The FL is a nigh flawless royal, which makes her character distant and hard to connect with. Hard to tell what kind of message the author is trying to convey with the storyline.

    Genuinely Awful.
What garbage— “Beneath the Mask” immediately fails to establish the setting and premise; there’s no establishing of a connection between the reader and ANY of the characters. “Show, don’t tell,” is common writing advice, but this manga pathetically trips over its attempts at either.

Even the most brain dead soap operas are more entertaining than this vague nonsense. I can appreciate a good power fantasy, but this manga is so painfully boring.

    Messy
This review contains spoilers. It’s the first time after reading the thirteen first chapters that I don’t want to buy the following chapters. I don’t get the plot of this story. All the male interests are related to the female lead and to each other…So you feel uncomfortable reading this. I am very disappointed because the art is beautiful.

    No real stakes
The premise is interesting but with the MC always knowing what to do and what's having the right tool for the job, there's no stakes, no worries, nothing to resolve. Much of the story doesn't read quite right; there will be a strange circumstance that seems accidental/coincidental and then you'll find out it was orchestrated, but without any of the intrigue or pay off. Also everyone is related in the main romances.

The art is pretty and there's some potential, and it could be called a power fantasy if it had any finesse or depth. But 13 chapters in (premium) and I'm struggling to find it.

    Must read!
Just wow. Totally love this manga! The art is so beautiful and the storyline is good too. I usually not a fan of the usual villainess engagement being called off because it's always the same plot but this one totally different than other! Never regret my decision to read this!!

    Hidden identities & political intrigue...
This review contains spoilers. I would say this felt much more like a fantasy political thriller than a romance. An immersive story that slowly reveals the identities and the darker sides of the MCs. Cunning, smart FL and fleshed out side characters.

TL;DR: Very well written, definitely recommend.

    MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW:
The guy on the cover is (probably?) not the final ML but the (most likely?) ML is still distantly related to FL and they consider each other family... it did make reading it feel a bit iffy at times. Do with that what you will...
What I like most is that the plot uses and subverts tropes very well and handles things like obsessive feelings seriously like the red flags they are. So overall I still think it's a very good read.

    Quite Funny…
They give you a fair bit of exposition already in the first chapter, so I’m still wondering what will be the story for this after the first chapter. FL is very beautiful indeed under the mask, so I’m waiting for the day she finally gets to show her face to everybody else.
